It replaced ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons in refrigeration and aerosol systems, becoming the standard in multiple regulated sectors. In automotive and commercial HVAC systems, R-134a functions as the primary refrigerant.

It is used in air conditioning circuits, meeting OEM specifications for vehicle climate control. Aerospace and defense procurement teams source it for environmental control systems in aircraft cabins and ground support equipment.

In aerosol formulations, it acts as a propellant and carrier solvent for technical sprays, including contact cleaners and precision electronics maintenance products. The oil and gas sector uses it in specialized leak detection equipment.

It is also utilized in portable cooling units operating in field environments. 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane is supplied as a liquefied gas in pressurized cylinders, recovery tanks, and bulk ISO containers.

Refrigerant-grade (R-134a) is the dominant commercial specification, with purity levels typically meeting AHRI 700 standards for moisture content, acidity, and non-condensable gases.
