Sodium selenite
Description
Sodium selenite (CAS 10102-18-8), also supplied under the formula designation Na2SeO3, is an inorganic selenium compound used as a controlled selenium source across nutritional, agricultural, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
It delivers a bioavailable form of the trace mineral selenium where precise, low-level dosing is required. In animal feed production, it is incorporated into premixes and mineral supplements to meet selenium requirements.
This is essential in livestock and poultry, where deficiency causes muscular disorders and reduced reproductive performance. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as the active selenium source in parenteral nutrition solutions.
It is also used in dietary supplement tablets targeting selenium-deficient populations. In human food fortification, it is added at regulated trace levels to functional foods and nutritional products where selenium status is a target.
Fertilizer and agrochemical producers also use it in foliar sprays and soil treatments to correct selenium-deficient growing conditions. The material is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granule.
Standard grades include feed-grade, food-grade, and pharmaceutical-grade (USP/BP), with purity levels typically at 98% or higher. Packaging is handled under strict containment protocols given the low exposure levels.
Material is commonly available in small-quantity technical packs through to bulk industrial quantities. This ensures that manufacturers can source the exact volume required for their specific production processes and safety standards.
