Sodium iodide
Description
Sodium iodide (CAS 7681-82-5), commonly referenced as NaI, is an inorganic iodine salt used as an iodine source across pharmaceutical manufacturing, nutritional supplementation, and chemical synthesis.
It delivers bioavailable iodine in dosage forms and acts as a catalyst or reagent in organic reactions requiring halide exchange. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, NaI is used to produce iodine-containing active ingredients.
It serves as a source compound in thyroid-related drug formulations. The Finkelstein reaction, a standard halide exchange process in organic synthesis, relies on NaI to convert alkyl chlorides or bromides into alkyl iodides.
This makes it a routine reagent in fine chemical and API production. In animal feed and agricultural nutrition products, it functions as an iodine fortification agent to address iodine deficiency in livestock.
Food-grade NaI also serves as an iodine source in salt iodization programs and dietary supplement formulations targeting human nutritional requirements. Sodium iodide is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules.
Recognized grades include USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. for pharmaceutical applications, as well as food-grade specifications for nutritional and feed uses. Technical grade is available for industrial and synthesis applications.
