Description

Sodium periodate (CAS 7790-28-5), also known as sodium metaperiodate, is a strong inorganic oxidizing agent used across industrial and laboratory-scale processes. It selectively cleaves diol bonds in carbohydrates and glycols. This chemical serves as a standard reagent in pharmaceutical synthesis and analytical chemistry. In industrial settings, it functions as a bleaching and biocidal agent in water treatment, textile processing, and paper manufacturing.

In pharmaceutical and biochemical manufacturing, it is used to oxidize polysaccharides and glycoproteins. This is a critical step in conjugate vaccine production and drug intermediate synthesis for various medical applications. Textile processors apply it to modify cellulose fibers, improving dye uptake and enabling functional finishing treatments. In water treatment, it acts as a biocide and oxidant to control microbial growth.

It is also used to break down organic contaminants in industrial effluent systems. Paper and pulp operations use it as a selective bleaching agent to improve brightness without degrading the underlying fiber structure. The product is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granular solid. It is available in technical grade for industrial applications and in high-purity grades meeting reagent or ACS specifications.

These high-purity grades are ideal for pharmaceutical and analytical use. Packaging ranges from small laboratory quantities to bulk industrial supply, with moisture-controlled packaging standard for oxidizer-grade material.
