Calcium iodate

Calcium iodate (CAS 7789-80-2), also designated E916, is an inorganic iodine salt used commercially as an iodine source and oxidizing agent.

Where is Calcium iodate used?

• Animal feed: trace mineral premix component supplying bioavailable iodine to livestock and poultry
• Bread and baked goods: dough conditioner improving processing
• Personal care: antimicrobial agent in oral care products such as mouthwashes and toothpastes
• Lotions: antiseptic and antiperspirant.
• Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulators source it as an iodine fortification ingredient for tablets and dietary supplements targeting iodine deficiency.

Formulation notes

• Incompatible with strong reducing agents.
• Can react violently with arsenic, copper, carbon, metal sulfides, organic matter, phosphorus, selenium, and sulfur.
• Usually the most stable source of iodine compared with EDDI and potassium iodide.

Typical specification

• Sold in powder form at 98% and ≥95% assay grades.
• Water solubility 0.24 g/100 mL at 20 °C.
• Hexahydrate loses its water of crystallization at 40 °C to become anhydrous.
• Does not change when mixed with various trace element additives.

Regulatory status

• Classified as an oxidizing solid (UN 1479, class 5.1, packing group II).
