Methylcyclohexane
Description
Methylcyclohexane (CAS 108-87-2), also known commercially as MCH and toluene hexahydride, is a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon solvent used across industrial and specialty chemical applications. It functions as a non-polar solvent and process carrier where low water miscibility and controlled evaporation are required. In catalyst research and chemical synthesis, MCH serves as a hydrogen carrier.
This occurs in thermochemical energy storage systems, where cyclical dehydrogenation to toluene enables hydrogen release on demand. Formulators in personal care use it as a solvent carrier in fragrance concentrates. It is also utilized in aerosol delivery systems requiring clean evaporation profiles. In flavor and fragrance manufacturing, MCH acts as an extraction and dilution solvent for sensitive aroma compounds.
This is particularly useful where residual solvent control is critical to finished product compliance. Industrial coatings and adhesive processors also select it as a hydrocarbon diluent. It is preferred in applications where aromatic solvents must be avoided. Methylcyclohexane is supplied as a clear liquid in standard bulk quantities including drums, IBCs, and isotanks.
Technical grade is the most common commercial specification, with high-purity grades available for catalyst and specialty synthesis applications. Buyers should confirm purity thresholds before sourcing. Residual aromatic content should be checked against process or regulatory requirements. This ensures the material meets the necessary performance standards for specific industrial or laboratory use.
