Description

Triethylene glycol (CAS 112-27-6), commonly abbreviated as TEG, is a high-boiling glycol ether used across industrial and specialty chemical markets as a solvent, humectant, and chemical intermediate.

Its low volatility and hygroscopic character make it a preferred choice where controlled moisture retention or selective absorption is required in process and formulation environments.

In natural gas processing, TEG is the standard dehydration agent used to remove water vapor from gas streams before pipeline transport. Plastics and polymer manufacturers use it as a reactive intermediate.

In polyester and polyurethane synthesis, it contributes to chain flexibility and crosslink density. In personal care and pharmaceutical formulations, it functions as a humectant and solvent carrier.

It is used for active ingredients in creams, gels, and liquid dosage forms. Air disinfection systems also employ TEG as a low-toxicity antimicrobial agent dispersed as a fine mist.

This application helps to reduce airborne pathogens in enclosed spaces. Triethylene glycol is supplied as a clear, low-viscosity liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities.

Standard commercial grades include technical and high-purity specifications, with the latter meeting requirements for pharmaceutical and personal care applications.

Moisture content and purity levels are key specification parameters buyers should confirm against application requirements to ensure optimal performance in their specific industrial processes.
