1-Dodecanethiol
Description
1-Dodecanethiol (CAS 112-55-0), commercially known as dodecyl mercaptan, is a long-chain aliphatic thiol used as a chain transfer agent, flavoring component, and chemical intermediate across multiple industries. Its primary industrial role is controlling polymer molecular weight during free-radical polymerization and providing sulfurous flavor notes at trace concentrations. In polymer manufacturing, it regulates chain length during production.
This process is essential for synthetic rubbers, ABS resins, and styrene-butadiene latex, directly influencing the mechanical properties of the finished material. In food flavoring, it contributes characteristic roasted, meaty, and savory notes. These flavor compositions are effective at very low use levels. Personal care formulators incorporate it as a building block for sulfur-containing surfactants and conditioning agents used in various hair care products.
Coatings and adhesive manufacturers also use it as a surface modifier and stabilizer to improve adhesion and extend shelf life of reactive formulations. It is supplied as a clear to pale yellow liquid in drum and IBC quantities. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering, suitable for polymer and industrial applications. Food-grade material meeting FCC specifications is available for flavor and fragrance end uses.
