Aminomethyl propanediol
Description
Aminomethyl propanediol (CAS 115-69-5), commonly abbreviated as AMPD, is a multifunctional amino alcohol used across personal care, pharmaceutical, and industrial coating formulations. It acts primarily as a pH buffer and neutralizing agent, adjusting and stabilizing formulation pH without introducing unwanted ionic species into the final chemical mixture.
In personal care and cosmetic formulations, AMPD neutralizes carbomer and acrylate polymers to build viscosity in creams, lotions, and gels for consumer use. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a buffering agent in topical preparations where controlled pH stability is critical to product shelf life and overall efficacy.
In waterborne coatings and adhesives, it functions as a neutralizer for resin systems, improving dispersion stability and film formation during the manufacturing process. Its secondary hydroxyl groups also support moisture retention in formulations where humectancy is a secondary performance requirement alongside precise pH control.
AMPD is supplied as a white crystalline solid or as an aqueous solution, with pharmaceutical-grade material available to USP and BP specifications. Standard commercial grades include technical and cosmetic grades, with packaging typically ranging from small drums to bulk quantities suited to industrial procurement volumes.
