Sodium toluenesulfonate
Description
Sodium toluenesulfonate (CAS 12068-03-0), also known as sodium tosylate, is an aromatic sulfonate salt used across formulation and process chemistry as a hydrotrope and solubilizing agent.
It improves the water solubility of poorly soluble actives and surfactant systems, enabling stable, high-performance liquid formulations. In personal care and household cleaning products, it functions as a hydrotrope.
This chemical reduces viscosity and improves clarity in surfactant-heavy formulations such as shampoos, liquid detergents, and body washes. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a solubilizer and counterion source.
In API salt formation, it improves bioavailability and processability of active compounds. In agrochemical formulations, it supports the dispersion and wetting of active ingredients in suspension concentrates.
It is also utilized in emulsifiable concentrates. Industrial process chemistry employs it as a coupling agent and phase modifier in sulfonation and synthesis workflows to ensure efficient chemical reactions.
Sodium toluenesulfonate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules. Technical and industrial grades are the most commonly available, with purity levels typically at 98% or higher for most uses.
Pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP or Ph.Eur. specifications is available for regulated applications requiring documented quality standards and high levels of material consistency.
