Sodium p-phenolsulfonate
Description
Sodium p-phenolsulfonate (CAS 825-90-1), also known as sodium 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, is an aromatic sulfonate salt used across textile, leather, and personal care manufacturing.
It functions primarily as a surface modifier, wetting agent, and antimicrobial intermediate in industrial processing and formulation. In textile and leather processing, it improves dye uptake and fiber wetting.
This enables more uniform color distribution across substrates. Personal care formulators use it as a preservative booster or antimicrobial component in rinse-off and leave-on products where broad-spectrum activity is required.
In paper manufacturing, it supports surface treatment processes where controlled wetting and fiber interaction are critical to end-product quality. It also serves as a synthetic intermediate in producing sulfonated phenolic compounds.
These compounds are used in pigment and colorant chemistry. Sodium p-phenolsulfonate is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder. Both anhydrous and hydrated forms are available commercially.
Anhydrous grades are the standard for most industrial applications. Technical-grade material is the most common supply specification, though higher-purity grades are available for personal care and specialty formulation use.
