Sodium ortho-phenylphenate
Description
Sodium ortho-phenylphenate (CAS 132-27-4), also known as sodium o-phenylphenol, is the sodium salt form of ortho-phenylphenol, offering enhanced water solubility compared to its parent phenol.
It functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and preservative active across industrial, agricultural, and consumer-facing applications. In textile and leather processing, it controls microbial growth in wet-processing baths.
The compound protects hides during storage and transit. Food-contact surface sanitizers and hard-surface disinfectants in food processing facilities rely on it as the active biocidal ingredient.
Personal care and cosmetic formulators incorporate it as a preservative booster in rinse-off and leave-on products where water-soluble antimicrobial actives are required for stability.
In agriculture, it is used in post-harvest treatments and storage facility disinfection to prevent fungal and bacterial contamination of produce. This ensures the longevity and safety of the food supply.
Sodium ortho-phenylphenate is supplied as a white to off-white powder or as an aqueous solution, with concentration and purity specifications varying by end-use market requirements.
Technical grade material is standard for industrial disinfection and textile applications. Purer grades meeting pesticide registration requirements are available for food-contact and agricultural end uses.
