Propylparaben sodium
Description
Propylparaben sodium (CAS 35285-69-9), also known as E217, is the water-soluble sodium salt form of propylparaben, developed specifically to overcome the limited aqueous solubility of its parent ester.
It functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care applications. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it protects oral suspensions, syrups, and topical formulations.
This is particularly useful in formulations where high water content would otherwise limit standard propylparaben use. Food and beverage producers apply E217 in aqueous-based products including sauces and beverages.
It is also used in bakery fillings where direct incorporation of a water-soluble preservative is required. Personal care formulators use it in lotions, shampoos, and liquid cosmetics to extend shelf life.
The ingredient helps maintain product clarity and stability during storage. It is often combined with methylparaben or other paraben salts to achieve broader antimicrobial coverage across a wider range of organisms.
Propylparaben sodium is supplied as a white crystalline powder. It is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with the latter conforming to USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. standards.
Packaging is typically offered in kilogram bags through to bulk quantities suitable for industrial-scale production. This ensures consistent quality and reliability for large-scale manufacturing requirements.
