Description

Propylparaben (CAS 94-13-3), also sold under trade names Tegosept P, Solbrol P, and Protaben P, is a synthetic preservative approved as E216 across food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications. It inhibits the growth of mold, yeast, and bacteria at low concentrations, making it one of the most cost-effective broad-spectrum antimicrobial options available to formulators today.

In personal care and cosmetics, it is used to preserve lotions, shampoos, and creams against microbial contamination throughout shelf life. This ensures product safety and maintains integrity for consumers. Pharmaceutical manufacturers incorporate it as a preservative in oral suspensions, topical preparations, and multi-dose injectable formulations where microbial control is a strict regulatory requirement.

Food and beverage producers apply it under the E216 designation to protect baked goods, sauces, and beverages. It is often used in combination with methylparaben for broader efficacy and protection. In coatings and adhesive systems, it functions as a biocide to prevent microbial degradation during storage and application. This helps maintain the physical properties of industrial chemical mixtures.

Propylparaben is supplied as a white crystalline powder. Standard grades include USP, BP, Ph. Eur., and FCC, covering pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food-grade procurement requirements. Technical grade is also available for industrial applications such as coatings and adhesive systems. These high-purity standards ensure consistent performance across all manufacturing sectors.
