Isobutylparaben
Description
Isobutylparaben (CAS 4247-02-3), also known as isobutyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, is a paraben-series preservative used across food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing.
It inhibits microbial growth in finished formulations, extending product shelf life across a broad range of applications. In cosmetics and personal care, it functions as a preservative.
It is used in creams, lotions, and emulsions where longer oil-phase compatibility is required compared to shorter-chain parabens. Pharmaceutical manufacturers incorporate it into topical preparations.
It is also used in oral suspensions and semi-solid dosage forms to prevent microbial contamination during storage. Food-grade applications include use as an antimicrobial agent.
This applies to certain processed food products where regulatory frameworks permit paraben use. It also appears as an intermediate in the synthesis of more complex paraben esters.
Isobutylparaben is supplied as a white crystalline powder. Standard commercial grades include food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade material, with the latter typically conforming to USP specifications.
The material may also conform to Ph. Eur. standards. Packaging is available in kilogram-scale quantities for laboratory and formulation use, as well as larger bulk formats.
These bulk formats are designed for industrial production. The product ensures high stability and efficacy across various pH levels in diverse manufacturing environments.
