Benzylparaben
Description
Benzylparaben (CAS 94-18-8), also known as Benzyl p-hydroxybenzoate, is a paraben-series preservative used across cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food-contact applications. It inhibits microbial growth in formulations where longer chain parabens are preferred. These longer chain parabens are valued for their enhanced lipophilicity and oil-phase compatibility. In cosmetics and personal care, it functions as a broad-spectrum preservative in creams, lotions, and emulsions.
It is particularly effective in oil-rich or anhydrous systems where water-soluble preservatives underperform. Pharmaceutical formulators incorporate it to protect topical preparations, ointments, and some oral dosage forms. This protection prevents bacterial and fungal contamination during the product shelf life. Its UV-stabilizing activity makes it relevant in formulations requiring secondary antioxidant or photostabilizer support.
It is often used alongside primary UV filters to maintain product integrity. As a flavoring agent, it appears in fragrance and flavor compositions at controlled use levels to enhance specific profiles. Benzylparaben is supplied as a white crystalline powder for industrial use. Standard grades include cosmetic/technical and pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP and Ph.Eur. specifications.
Buyers sourcing for regulated pharmaceutical or personal care applications should confirm compendial compliance. Always verify certificate of analysis documentation with each lot to ensure the highest quality standards.
