Methylparaben
Description
Methylparaben (CAS 99-76-3), also known as Tegosept M, is a synthetic antimicrobial preservative used across pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food manufacturing. It inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold in finished formulations. This chemical extends product shelf life at low use concentrations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it preserves oral suspensions, topical creams, and injectable preparations where microbial contamination control is a regulatory requirement.
Personal care producers rely on it to protect lotions, shampoos, and makeup products from spoilage throughout their shelf life. Food and beverage manufacturers apply it under FEMA 2710 designation to protect goods. It is commonly used in processed goods, beverages, and flavoring systems. It also functions as a UV stabilizer in certain formulations, protecting active ingredients from photodegradation during storage and transport.
Methylparaben is supplied as a white crystalline powder. Standard grades include USP, BP, Ph. Eur., and FCC, covering pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food-grade procurement requirements for global supply chains. Technical grade is available for industrial preservation applications where compendial certification is not required. This versatile preservative remains a staple for ensuring product safety and stability across multiple industries.
