Sodium methylparaben

Sodium methylparaben (CAS 5026-62-0), also known by its EU food additive designation E219, is the sodium salt form of methylparaben used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative.

Where is Sodium methylparaben used?

• Pharmaceuticals: protects liquid oral preparations
• Topical creams and injectable formulations: protection against microbial contamination throughout shelf life
• Personal care: shampoos, lotions and wet wipes where water activity creates spoilage risk
• Food: permitted in select food categories to extend product stability, particularly processed foods and beverages where alternative preservatives may affect taste or regulatory standing
• Coating and adhesive systems with aqueous carrier phases use it to prevent in-can microbial growth during storage and distribution.
