Sodium benzoate
Description
Sodium benzoate (CAS 532-32-1), also known as E211, is the sodium salt of benzoic acid used as a broad-spectrum preservative across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care industries.
It inhibits microbial growth in acidic environments, making it one of the most established antimicrobial agents in commercial formulation. In food and beverage production, it is used to extend shelf life.
It is commonly found in carbonated drinks, fruit juices, condiments, and pickled products at concentrations typically below 0.1%. Pharmaceutical manufacturers incorporate it as a preservative in oral liquids and syrups.
It is also used in topical preparations where low-pH stability is required. Personal care formulators use it in rinse-off and leave-on products such as shampoos, lotions, and wet wipes as a cost-effective alternative.
The compound also functions as a pH buffer and corrosion inhibitor in certain industrial process fluids. It is supplied as a white granular powder or fine crystalline powder for various manufacturing needs.
Standard grades include food-grade (FCC), USP, BP, and Ph. Eur., supporting qualification across regulated industries. These certifications ensure high purity and safety for consumer products.
Technical grade is available for industrial applications where pharmacopoeial certification is not required. This versatility makes it a staple ingredient for global chemical distributors and manufacturers.
