Calcium propionate
Description
Calcium propionate (CAS 4075-81-4), also known by the E-number E282, is the calcium salt of propionic acid used commercially as a mold and bacterial inhibitor in food, feed, and pharmaceutical applications. Bioban-C is a recognized trade name for industrial-grade material targeting microbial control in non-food contexts. In baked goods, E282 extends shelf life by inhibiting mold and rope-forming bacteria without affecting yeast activity.
This makes it the preservative of choice for bread, rolls, and tortillas. Animal feed manufacturers incorporate it to prevent mycotoxin-producing mold growth in silage, grain mixes, and complete feeds for livestock. Pharmaceutical tablet and coating formulators use it as a buffering agent and antimicrobial excipient in solid dosage forms. Personal care producers apply it in creams and lotions where low-level preservation is required.
It provides mild pH buffering without the regulatory burden of stronger biocides. Calcium propionate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules, with granular forms preferred in automated dosing lines. Standard grades include food-grade (FCC), feed-grade, and pharmaceutical-grade (USP/BP), each carrying distinct purity and heavy metal specifications. Packaging typically ranges from 25 kg bags to bulk supersacks.
