Sodium pyrithione
Description
Sodium pyrithione (CAS 3811-73-2), also known as Omadine sodium and abbreviated as NaPT, is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial active used across industrial and personal care formulations.
It controls bacterial and fungal growth in water-based systems where contamination poses product stability or regulatory risks. In paints, coatings, and adhesives, NaPT functions as an in-can preservative.
This prevents microbial spoilage during storage and extends the shelf life of water-based products. Personal care formulators incorporate it into shampoos and skin care products as an antifungal active.
It is particularly effective in anti-dandruff formulations where it targets scalp-related fungi. Industrial water treatment programs use NaPT to control biofilm formation and microbial proliferation.
It is utilized in recirculating and process water systems. In sealants and elastomers, it protects water-borne formulations from bacterial degradation that would otherwise compromise viscosity and performance.
Sodium pyrithione is supplied as an aqueous solution, typically at 40% active concentration, and as a dry powder form for applications requiring solvent-free handling during the manufacturing process.
Technical and cosmetic grades are available, with cosmetic-grade material meeting purity specifications required for personal care and pharmaceutical end uses. Buyers should confirm grade suitability.
Check against regulatory requirements for their target market, as permitted use levels and approved applications vary by region. Ensure all materials meet necessary safety and compliance standards.
