Zinc pyrithione
Description
Zinc pyrithione (CAS 13463-41-7), commonly abbreviated as ZPT, is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent used across personal care, coatings, and industrial water treatment applications. Known also as zinc pyridinethione, it controls fungal and bacterial growth in formulated products and process systems.
In antidandruff shampoos and scalp treatments, ZPT is the active ingredient that controls Malassezia yeast, making it one of the most established actives in OTC haircare. Marine and architectural coatings rely on it as a biocidal additive.
This additive helps to prevent algae, mold, and mildew growth on exterior surfaces. Adhesives, sealants, and elastomers incorporate ZPT to extend product shelf life and resist microbial degradation in humid or outdoor environments.
Industrial water treatment systems use it to suppress microbial fouling in recirculating and process water circuits. Zinc pyrithione is supplied primarily as a white to off-white powder and as aqueous dispersions.
These dispersions are typically provided at 48% active content. Standard grades include technical and cosmetic-grade specifications, with cosmetic-grade material subject to purity requirements aligned with regional regulatory limits.
These limits apply specifically to leave-on and rinse-off formulations. Drum and IBC packaging are standard for bulk procurement, ensuring safe handling and efficient transport for large-scale industrial and manufacturing operations.
