Description

Pyrithione (CAS 1121-31-9), also known as Omadine, is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial active used across industrial and personal care markets. It functions as a biocide and preservative, targeting bacteria, fungi, and algae.

In personal care, it is the active ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos and scalp treatments, where it controls the fungal growth responsible for dandruff. It is essential for maintaining product integrity and efficacy.

Coatings and marine antifouling systems rely on it to prevent microbial and algal buildup on surfaces exposed to moisture or immersion. This ensures long-term protection for various industrial and maritime applications.

In water treatment, it controls microbial contamination in industrial process water, cooling towers, and recirculating systems. This helps maintain system efficiency and prevents the buildup of harmful biological films.

Adhesives, sealants, and elastomers incorporate it as an in-can or dry-film preservative to extend product shelf life. This prevents microbial degradation during storage and ensures the material remains stable over time.

The material is supplied as a crystalline powder and in aqueous solution form, with concentration levels varying by application requirement. It is available in technical and industrial grades for diverse uses.

Purity specifications are available suited for pharmaceutical and personal care use, often meeting USP or Ph.Eur. standards. Zinc and sodium salt forms are the most commercially traded derivatives.

Zinc Pyrithione and Sodium Pyrithione are sourced separately based on formulation compatibility and specific performance needs. These derivatives offer versatile solutions for modern chemical manufacturing and preservation.
