Pyrithione

Pyrithione (CAS 1121-31-9), also known as Omadine, is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial active.

Where is Pyrithione used?

• Personal care: active ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos and scalp treatments, controlling fungal growth responsible for dandruff
• Coatings and marine antifouling systems: prevents microbial and algal buildup on surfaces exposed to moisture or immersion
• Water treatment: controls microbial contamination in industrial process water, cooling towers and recirculating systems
• Adhesives, sealants and elastomers: in-can or dry-film preservative extending shelf life
• It targets bacteria, fungi and algae as a biocide and preservative.

Good to know: Purity specifications suited for pharmaceutical and personal care use often meet USP or Ph. Eur. standards. Zinc and sodium salt forms are the most commercially traded derivatives, sourced separately based on formulation compatibility and performance needs.
