Sodium ichthyol
Description
Sodium ichthyol (CAS 1340-06-3), also known commercially as Ichthyol, is a sulfonated shale oil derivative used primarily for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.
It is produced by the distillation and sulfonation of oil-bearing shale, yielding a dark, viscous material with broad-spectrum activity against bacteria and fungi. Procurement demand is driven largely by dermatological product manufacturers.
In pharmaceutical topical preparations, this compound is the active ingredient in ointments and creams targeting acne, eczema, folliculitis, and localized skin infections. Compounding pharmacies source it to prepare customized formulations.
In personal care, it is incorporated into scalp treatments and anti-dandruff products where its antimicrobial action targets fungal overgrowth. Agricultural and veterinary applications include topical treatments for hoof conditions.
Sodium ichthyol is supplied as a dark, viscous liquid or semi-solid paste, typically in concentrations of 10% or 50% aqueous preparations, as well as in near-anhydrous form for specific industrial uses.
Pharmaceutical-grade material conforming to Ph. Eur. and BP specifications is the standard for medicinal applications. Technical-grade material is available for veterinary and agricultural end uses.
