Description

2-Chloro-5-methoxyaniline (CAS 2401-24-3), also known commercially as 6-chloro-m-anisidine, is an aromatic amine intermediate used in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients and specialty agrochemicals. Its dual functional groups, a reactive amine and a chloro substituent, make it a building block for constructing complex heterocyclic and azo-based target molecules for various industrial applications.

In pharmaceutical synthesis, it serves as a key starting material for manufacturing drug candidates, particularly in programs targeting kinase inhibitors and other small-molecule therapeutics where precise substitution patterns are required. Agrochemical manufacturers use it in the production of herbicide and fungicide active ingredients, where the chloro and methoxy groups direct selective reactivity during coupling steps in the manufacturing process.

Dye and pigment producers incorporate it into azo dye synthesis, where the aniline nitrogen undergoes diazotization to generate stable colorant intermediates for textile and industrial coatings. It also appears in polymer research as a co-monomer or initiator component in specialty polymerization systems. This versatile chemical is typically supplied as a liquid or low-melting solid for easy handling.

It is available in technical grade for industrial synthesis and in higher-purity grades suited to pharmaceutical intermediate applications. Packaging ranges from small research quantities to bulk drum supply.
