3-chloro-2-methylaniline
Description
3-Chloro-2-methylaniline (CAS 87-60-5), also known commercially as Fast Scarlet TR Base and 3-Chloro-o-toluidine, is an aromatic amine intermediate used in the synthesis of azo dyes, pigments, and specialty chemicals. It functions primarily as a coupling component and diazonium precursor in colorant manufacturing. In textile and leather dyeing, it serves as a base for developing fast azo colors directly on fiber.
This chemical produces scarlet and red shades with strong wash fastness. Pigment manufacturers use it to produce organic red pigments incorporated into printing inks and packaging coatings where color intensity is critical. Substrate adhesion is a key benefit when using this intermediate in industrial coatings. In plastics, it contributes to the production of colored polymer compounds and can act as a curing agent or cross-linker.
Specialty resin systems often utilize this compound for its specific reactive properties. Formulators in personal care and cosmetics may incorporate derived colorants into approved pigment preparations for decorative applications. 3-Chloro-2-methylaniline is supplied as a liquid or low-melting solid, typically in technical grade. It is available in bulk drums and IBC containers suited to industrial-scale dye and pigment production.
Purity specifications generally range from 98% to 99%+ for synthesis-grade material. Documentation for each shipment includes a COA and relevant purity assays to ensure consistent quality for manufacturing.
