Description

PVP/VA copolymer (CAS 25086-89-9) is a film-forming polymer produced from vinylpyrrolidone and vinyl acetate monomers in varying ratios. It delivers controlled film formation, adhesion, and moisture resistance across personal care, pharmaceutical, and industrial coating applications.

These properties provide performance benefits that pure PVP alone cannot achieve. In hair care, it functions as the primary fixative in styling sprays, mousses, and gels, where the VA content controls hold strength and humidity resistance relative to the VP ratio.

Pharmaceutical tablet coating and transdermal patch formulations use it as a film former and adhesion promoter. Grade selection is typically driven by the specific VP:VA ratio required for the final drug delivery system or coating thickness.

In printing inks and overprint varnishes, it improves substrate adhesion and surface gloss on both porous and non-porous substrates. This versatility makes it a staple in high-performance industrial coatings and specialized packaging applications.

Skin care formulators incorporate it into long-wear foundations and sunscreens to extend wear and improve water resistance. Its ability to form a flexible, breathable film ensures comfort while maintaining the integrity of the cosmetic product on the skin.

PVP/VA copolymer is supplied as an aqueous solution or anhydrous ethanol solution, with dry powder forms available for specific applications. The VP:VA ratio, commonly 60:40 or 70:30, is the primary specification buyers use to match performance.

Cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades are the standard market offerings for this material. Pharmaceutical-grade material is manufactured to meet USP/NF monograph requirements, ensuring high purity and consistency for sensitive medical applications.
