Polyvinyl alcohol
Description
Polyvinyl alcohol (CAS 9002-89-5), commonly abbreviated as PVA or PVOH, is a water-soluble synthetic polymer produced by hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. It functions as a film-former, binder, and emulsion stabilizer across a broad range of industrial processes.
Approved as E1203 in food-contact and pharmaceutical applications, it is a versatile material. In textile sizing, PVA is applied to warp yarns to reduce breakage during weaving, then washed out cleanly after processing.
This clean removal is a critical factor for mills managing effluent compliance. Paper and board manufacturers use it as a surface sizing agent and pigment binder to improve printability and surface strength during the production cycle.
In construction, PVA is a key binder in tile adhesives, cement renders, and gypsum-based compounds. It effectively controls rheology and improves adhesion to substrates, ensuring long-term structural integrity for building materials.
Packaging converters rely on PVA films for water-soluble pouches used in detergent unit-dose formats and agrochemical sachets. This application highlights the polymer's unique ability to dissolve completely in aqueous environments.
The material is supplied as a white to cream powder or granules, with viscosity grade and degree of hydrolysis being the primary specification parameters. Standard grades include fully hydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed variants.
Each variant is suited to different solubility and film-flexibility requirements. Pharmaceutical and food-contact supply is available to USP, Ph. Eur., and E1203 specifications to meet global regulatory demands.
