Polyvinyl chloride
Description
Polyvinyl chloride (CAS 9002-86-2), commonly known as PVC, is one of the most commercially produced thermoplastic polymers in the global market. Available in both rigid and flexible formulations, it serves as the base resin for an extensive range of manufactured goods.
The material is utilized across construction, automotive, and industrial sectors due to its versatile chemical properties. In building and construction, PVC resin is compounded into window profiles, pipes, fittings, and cladding systems.
These applications require long-term dimensional stability and weather resistance for outdoor exposure. Flexible PVC grades, produced by incorporating plasticizers during compounding, are used in cable and wire insulation and flooring.
Other common uses include roofing membranes and medical tubing for healthcare environments. Automotive manufacturers rely on PVC-based compounds for interior trim, underbody coatings, and sealing profiles where cost-effective durability is a priority.
The resin also processes into films, bottles, and blister packaging for consumer goods and pharmaceutical applications. PVC is supplied as a white powder in suspension (S-PVC) and emulsion (E-PVC) grades for industrial use.
Each grade is suited to different processing methods, such as suspension grades for extrusion and calendering. Emulsion grades are preferred for plastisol and coating applications requiring specific viscosity and flow characteristics.
K-value ratings, typically ranging from K-57 to K-80, define molecular weight and processing characteristics relevant to buyer specifications. Technical and specialty grades are available to meet specific compounding requirements.
