Description

Polybutylene (CAS 9003-28-5), also marketed as poly-1-butene, is a semi-crystalline polyolefin resin used across plastics processing, construction, and automotive manufacturing. It functions primarily as a flexibility modifier and rheology agent in polymer blends and finished resin systems.

In pipe systems for hot and cold water distribution, polybutylene delivers long-term creep resistance and pressure retention, making it a preferred resin for extruded plumbing tube. Automotive manufacturers incorporate it into under-hood components and flexible tubing.

Where sustained heat exposure demands dimensional stability from the base polymer, this resin provides reliable performance. In polyolefin blending, it acts as a softening modifier to adjust stiffness and flow characteristics in polypropylene and polyethylene compounds.

This adjustment occurs without sacrificing processability during high-speed manufacturing. Film and packaging converters also use it to improve seal strength and flexibility in multilayer structures, ensuring product integrity during transport.

Polybutylene is supplied as pellets or granules suited for extrusion and injection molding processes. It is available in isotactic grades differentiated by melt flow index and molecular weight to match specific processing equipment.

These grades are designed to meet various end-use performance targets in industrial settings. Technical and pipe-grade specifications are the most commonly traded forms in industrial procurement for global chemical distribution networks.
