Polybutylene

Polybutylene (CAS 9003-29-6), also supplied under the trade designation Amoco 15H, is a semi-crystalline polyolefin produced from butene monomer.

Where is Polybutylene used?

• Plastics compounding and construction: flow modifier
• Hot melt adhesives and sealants: tackifier and rheology modifier improving open time and bond flexibility
• Building construction: pipe and plumbing systems resistant to creep under sustained pressure
• Automotive underhood and interior components: softens rigid polyolefin matrices and improves low-temperature impact performance
• Film and packaging: processing aid that reduces melt viscosity and enhances surface finish
• It is incorporated into injection molding applications.

Good to know: Grades are differentiated primarily by molecular weight and melt flow index. Specifications are confirmed against manufacturer datasheets on a per-lot basis.
