Polyethylene
Description
Polyethylene (CAS 9002-88-4), also known commercially as polythene and abbreviated as HDPE in its high-density form, is one of the most produced thermoplastic polymers in global supply chains.
It functions as a structural and barrier material across packaging, construction, and industrial manufacturing, where its processability and chemical resistance drive material selection decisions.
In packaging, polyethylene is extruded or blow-molded into bottles, films, and containers for food, personal care, and industrial chemical products for various sectors.
Construction applications include pipe systems, geomembranes, and vapor barriers where long-term durability under mechanical stress is required for infrastructure projects.
Automotive manufacturers use it for fuel tanks, under-hood components, and interior trim parts produced through injection or rotational molding for high-performance vehicles.
In printing and flexible packaging, low-density grades are converted into shrink films and lamination layers for multi-material structures used in consumer goods.
Polyethylene is supplied as pellets, powder, or granules depending on the intended processing method. Grades are differentiated by density classification including LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE, and HDPE.
Each grade targets distinct processing and performance requirements. Food-contact and pharmaceutical grades are available to meet FDA, EU, and USP compliance standards for regulated applications.
