1,3-butadiene
Description
1,3-Butadiene (CAS 106-99-0), commonly abbreviated as BD, is a gaseous diene monomer that serves as the primary building block for synthetic rubber and a broad range of polymer systems.
Divinyl is an older recognized synonym occasionally encountered in legacy technical literature. Its commercial significance lies almost entirely in large-scale polymerization processes.
It forms the backbone of elastomers and copolymer resins consumed across multiple industries. BD is the principal monomer in the production of polybutadiene rubber (PBR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR).
Both of these materials are processed into automotive tires, conveyor belts, and mechanical seals. In plastics, it is copolymerized with acrylonitrile and styrene to produce ABS resin.
This structural material is used in automotive components, electronics housings, and consumer goods. Nitrile rubber (NBR) is a critical material for fuel-resistant hoses, gaskets, and industrial gloves.
Styrene-butadiene latex derived from BD is also used as a binder in paper coatings and carpet backing adhesives. 1,3-Butadiene is supplied as a liquefied gas under pressure.
It is typically delivered in cylinders or bulk pressurized tankers for industrial-volume buyers. It is available in polymerization-grade and technical-grade specifications for various uses.
Polymerization grade commands strict purity thresholds to prevent inhibitor interference in downstream processes. This ensures high performance in the manufacturing of advanced synthetic materials.
