2-butyne-1,4-diol
Description
2-Butyne-1,4-diol (CAS 110-65-6), also known as bis(hydroxymethyl)acetylene, is a bifunctional acetylenic diol used as a corrosion inhibitor, chemical intermediate, and stabilizer across metalworking and polymer industries. Its two reactive hydroxyl groups flanking a triple bond make it a valued building block for synthesis and surface protection applications. In metalworking and acid pickling baths, it functions as a corrosion inhibitor.
This compound protects steel and iron surfaces during descaling and cleaning operations. Polymer and resin manufacturers use it as a monomer or crosslinking intermediate to introduce acetylenic functionality into polyurethanes. It is also utilized in polyesters and specialty coatings. In textile and leather processing, it acts as a stabilizer and preservative additive in treatment baths, helping to extend bath life and protect substrates.
Electroplating formulations also incorporate it to improve deposit quality and suppress unwanted oxidation during plating processes. This versatile chemical is supplied as a liquid or aqueous solution for various uses. Concentrations are commonly available at 35% and 98%+ for technical-grade applications. Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for industrial corrosion inhibition and synthesis use.
Packaging typically ranges from drums to IBC totes depending on volume requirements. This ensures safe handling and efficient transport for large-scale industrial operations and chemical manufacturing facilities.
