Vinyltrimethoxysilane
Description
Vinyltrimethoxysilane (CAS 2768-02-7), commonly abbreviated as VTMS, is a bifunctional organosilane monomer used to chemically bridge inorganic substrates and organic polymer matrices. It provides covalent bonding between mineral fillers, glass fibers, or metal surfaces and surrounding resin systems, improving composite performance and adhesion durability across various industries.
In polyolefin cable and pipe manufacturing, VTMS enables moisture-cure crosslinking of polyethylene, producing XLPE compounds with improved thermal and mechanical resistance for demanding environments. It functions as a coupling agent in glass fiber-reinforced composites, bonding the silica surface to epoxy, polyester, or polyurethane resins to increase tensile strength and reduce delamination.
Coatings and adhesive formulators use VTMS as an adhesion promoter on glass, aluminum, and mineral substrates, particularly in automotive glazing sealants and structural bonding applications. In electronics, it supports surface treatment of silica fillers used in encapsulants and underfill compounds, improving filler dispersion and moisture resistance in cured systems.
Vinyltrimethoxysilane is supplied as a clear liquid in drum and IBC quantities, with bulk tanker options available for high-volume buyers requiring consistent supply chains. Standard commercial grades include technical and industrial purity levels, typically specified at ≥97% or ≥98% purity. Specialty grades are available for high-performance polymer applications.
