Description

Irgarol (CAS 28159-98-0), also marketed as Irgarol 1051 and known by the common name Cybutryne, is a triazine-based biocide used to inhibit algae and microbial growth in protective coating systems. It functions as an antifouling agent, preventing biological colonization on submerged and exposed surfaces. In marine and industrial antifouling paints, Irgarol 1051 is incorporated as a co-biocide.

It is used alongside copper compounds to broaden the spectrum of protection against algae and slime-forming organisms. Coating formulators use it in hull paints, dock coatings, and offshore structure treatments. These applications are essential where long-term biostatic performance is required. In architectural and industrial coatings, it protects exterior surfaces from algal discoloration, extending the service life.

Sealants and elastomers for outdoor construction applications also incorporate Irgarol to prevent surface biofilm development. This is particularly effective in high-humidity environments for industrial use. Irgarol is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder. It is available in technical grade, with purity specifications typically at 97% or higher, suitable for direct use in coating formulations.

Packaging ranges from kilogram-scale quantities to bulk industrial supply depending on application volume requirements. This ensures flexibility for both small-scale testing and large-scale manufacturing.
