Description

Isophorone diisocyanate (CAS 4098-71-9), commonly known as IPDI, is an aliphatic cycloaliphatic diisocyanate monomer used to build polyurethane polymers with superior UV and weathering resistance. Unlike aromatic isocyanates, IPDI-based systems retain color stability over time, making it a preferred building block where appearance and outdoor durability are non-negotiable for manufacturers.

In automotive and industrial coatings, IPDI is reacted with polyols to produce two-component polyurethane topcoats and clearcoats that resist yellowing under prolonged UV exposure during service life. Aerospace and defense applications rely on IPDI-based polyurethane systems for protective coatings on aircraft exteriors and structural components where long-term performance under harsh environmental conditions is critical.

Adhesive and sealant formulators use IPDI to crosslink moisture-cure or two-part systems bonding plastics, composites, and metals in demanding assemblies. It also serves as a building block for dispersions. IPDI is supplied as a clear to slightly yellow liquid in standard industrial packaging including drums and IBC containers. It is available in technical and industrial grades for various uses.

Purity specifications are typically at 99%+ for polymer-grade applications. Prepolymer and trimer forms are also commercially available for formulators requiring modified reactivity or reduced vapor pressure.
