Aluminum chlorohydrex
Description
Aluminum chlorohydrex (CAS 53026-85-0) is a polymeric aluminum salt used primarily as an antiperspirant active in personal care formulations. It functions by forming a temporary plug in sweat ducts, reducing perspiration output at the skin surface.
In antiperspirant products, including roll-ons, sticks, and aerosol sprays, it delivers effective sweat reduction. It offers improved skin compatibility compared to anhydrous aluminum chloride for daily use applications.
Pharmaceutical-grade formulations use it as the active ingredient in clinical-strength antiperspirant preparations targeting hyperhidrosis management. It is valued for its efficacy in specialized medical treatments.
In water treatment, it acts as a coagulant to destabilize suspended particles and colloidal matter. This supports the clarification of drinking water and various industrial effluents in large scale systems.
Personal care formulators also incorporate it into combination deodorant-antiperspirant systems. Stability across pH ranges and compatibility with emollient bases are primary selection criteria for these products.
The material is supplied as an aqueous solution or as a dry powder, depending on the intended application and processing requirements. Standard grades include USP and cosmetic-grade specifications.
The propylene glycol complex form, aluminum chlorohydrex PG, is commonly specified for enhanced solubility in anhydrous stick formulations. Technical grade is also available for industrial water treatment applications.
