Cetyl palmitate
Description
Cetyl palmitate (CAS 540-10-3), also known as palmitic acid cetyl ester, is a natural wax ester derived from palmitic acid and cetyl alcohol. Found natively in spermaceti and plant-based wax fractions, it functions as an emollient and emulsifier.
This versatile compound serves as a lubricant across personal care, pharmaceutical, and industrial formulations. In cosmetics and skincare, it provides a smooth, non-greasy skin feel in creams, lotions, and lip products.
The ingredient contributes significantly to emulsion stability in various topical applications. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a lipid excipient in topical ointments and controlled-release solid dosage forms.
Its waxy matrix helps regulate active ingredient delivery in medical applications. In industrial lubricants and metalworking fluids, it acts as a boundary lubricant and surface modifier for high-performance needs.
The chemical reduces friction on metal surfaces during forming and machining operations. Personal care formulators also incorporate it into hair conditioners and styling waxes to improve texture and coat the hair shaft.
Cetyl palmitate is supplied as a white to off-white solid in flake or pastille form. It is available in cosmetic-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with the latter conforming to Ph.Eur. and NF monographs.
Packaging typically ranges from small drums to bulk quantities suited for industrial procurement volumes. This ensures that both small-scale laboratories and large-scale manufacturing facilities can meet their specific production requirements.
