Magnesium petroleum sulfonate
Description
Magnesium petroleum sulfonate (CAS 61789-87-5), also marketed as oil-soluble petroleum sulfonate magnesium salt, is a metal sulfonate detergent-dispersant derived from petroleum refining streams.
It functions primarily as a corrosion inhibitor, detergent additive, and emulsifier in lubricant and industrial fluid formulations. In engine and industrial lubricants, it acts as an overbased or neutral detergent.
This additive neutralizes acidic combustion by-products and keeps metal surfaces clean, extending oil service life. Metalworking fluid formulators use it to provide rust protection and emulsification stability in cutting oils.
It is also utilized in rolling fluids and the oil and gas sector. It is incorporated into pipeline corrosion inhibitor packages and drilling fluid additives where oil-phase compatibility is required for performance.
Automotive transmission fluids and gear oils also utilize it to maintain dispersancy and protect against oxidative deposit formation. This ensures the longevity and efficiency of mechanical components in various systems.
The product is supplied as a viscous liquid or oil solution, typically blended in a base oil carrier at defined active matter concentrations. It is available in neutral and overbased grades for specific needs.
Total base number (TBN) is the key specification buyers use to select the appropriate grade for their formulation. Supply is offered in drum and IBC quantities for diverse industrial requirements.
Bulk tanker options are also available for large-volume industrial customers. This ensures a reliable supply chain for manufacturers requiring consistent delivery of high-quality chemical additives for their operations.
