Chlorinated paraffins
Description
Chlorinated paraffins (CAS 63449-39-8), also marketed as chlorinated waxes and commonly abbreviated as CP, are produced by chlorinating straight-chain paraffin fractions to varying chlorine content levels.
They function simultaneously as flame retardants, secondary plasticizers, and extreme-pressure lubricant additives across a broad range of industrial manufacturing processes for global clients.
In PVC compounding, CPs extend primary plasticizers such as phthalates while contributing flame retardancy to cables, flooring, and flexible profiles. This reduces overall formulation cost without sacrificing performance.
Metalworking fluids rely on CP grades as extreme-pressure additives in cutting, stamping, and drawing operations. These additives protect tooling under high-load conditions during heavy manufacturing.
Rubber compounds for industrial belting and seals incorporate CPs to improve flame resistance and processing characteristics. In leather finishing, they provide durable flame-retardant treatment to finished goods.
Chlorinated paraffins are supplied as viscous liquids or solid waxes depending on the paraffin chain length. Short-chain, medium-chain, and long-chain grades are the primary commercial classifications.
Chlorine content typically ranges from approximately 40% to 70% by weight. Specific grades are selected based on application viscosity and the specific regulatory requirements of the target market.
The Technical-grade is the standard market form for industrial use. Buyers should confirm chain-length classification given differing regional regulatory status across SCCP, MCCP, and LCCP categories.
