Description

Hydrolyzed keratin (CAS 69430-36-0), also referred to as keratin hydrolyzates, is a protein-derived ingredient produced by breaking down keratin from wool, feathers, or hair into soluble peptides and amino acids.

It functions as a film-forming agent and moisture-binding ingredient across personal care, textile, and industrial applications. In hair care formulations it bonds to damaged hair cuticles, improving tensile strength and reducing breakage.

This functionality drives its specification in premium repair products like shampoos, conditioners, and treatment masks. Skin care formulators incorporate it into serums and creams where its peptide fractions support moisture retention.

These fractions specifically target the stratum corneum to enhance hydration. Textile processors apply the material in fiber finishing baths to improve softness, surface smoothness, and dye uptake on wool and synthetic blends.

Leather manufacturers use it in surface treatment formulations to restore flexibility and improve the feel of finished hides. The product is supplied as a liquid concentrate or spray-dried powder for various uses.

Liquid forms typically range from 25–50% active content depending on the specific grade. Grades are available for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and technical applications, with cosmetic-grade material being the most prevalent.

Molecular weight fractions vary by supplier and are selected based on target application. Lower molecular weights are used for skin penetration, while higher weights are preferred for surface film formation.
