Sulfated castor oil
Description
Sulfated castor oil (CAS 8002-33-3), also known as Turkey-red oil and commercially as SCO, is produced by treating castor oil with sulfuric acid to yield a self-emulsifying anionic surfactant.
It was among the first synthetic-process surfactants used in industry and remains a benchmark emulsifier and wetting agent across multiple manufacturing sectors for various industrial applications.
In textile processing, SCO enables uniform dye penetration and fiber lubrication during dyeing and finishing operations, particularly for cotton and wool. This ensures high-quality results in fabric production.
Leather manufacturers use it as a fat-liquoring and softening agent to improve hide flexibility and surface uniformity. In personal care formulations, it functions as an emulsifier and humectant.
It is commonly found in bath oils, hair preparations, and skin creams where oil-in-water dispersion is required. Agricultural formulators incorporate it as a wetting and spreading agent in pesticide concentrates.
Sulfated castor oil is supplied as a viscous amber liquid, typically at 75% active matter content, though concentrations vary by supplier specification. Standard grades include technical and industrial quality.
Textile and leather grades are the most commonly traded forms of this chemical. Buyers should confirm sulfation degree and active content against application requirements for optimal performance.
These specific parameters directly affect emulsification performance and the overall stability of the final product. Proper testing ensures the material meets the necessary industrial standards for use.
