Castor oil
Description
Castor oil (CAS 8001-79-4), also known as ricini oleum and E1503, is a vegetable-derived triglyceride oil pressed from the seeds of Ricinus communis. Its unusually high hydroxyl content makes it a commercially distinct raw material for polymer chemistry, lubrication, and surface coating formulations.
Unlike most vegetable oils, it functions as both a reactive intermediate and a functional additive across multiple industrial sectors. In coatings, adhesives, and sealants, it acts as a plasticizer and flexibilizing agent, improving elongation and adhesion in polyurethane and alkyd systems.
Lubricant formulators use it as a base fluid or additive in metalworking fluids, greases, and hydraulic systems where bio-based content is a procurement requirement. In plastics and polymer processing, it serves as a softener and processing aid, particularly in PVC compounds and nylon 11 production.
Personal care manufacturers incorporate it into lip products, hair conditioners, and emollient formulations where its film-forming and conditioning properties justify the cost. Castor oil is supplied as an amber to pale yellow viscous liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tankers.
Food-grade (FCC) and technical grades are the most commonly traded specifications. Refined, first-pressed, and hydrogenated variants are available depending on application requirements. This versatile oil remains a staple in global chemical supply chains due to its unique chemical structure.
The material is valued for its stability and performance in demanding industrial environments. Whether used in high-performance lubricants or as a food additive, it meets rigorous quality standards for purity and consistency across all major global markets.
