Coconut oil
Description
Coconut oil (CAS 8001-31-8), also traded as copra oil, is a tropical vegetable fat extracted from the dried kernel of the coconut palm. It functions as an emollient, emulsifier, and carrier base across food manufacturing and personal care formulation.
In food production, it serves as a frying medium, confectionery fat, and shortening component in baked goods, snack coatings, and compound chocolate. Personal care formulators use it as a moisturizing base and emollient in skin creams.
It is frequently utilized in hair conditioners, lip balms, and soap bars, where its high lauric acid content supports lather and skin feel. In home care and industrial cleaning, it acts as a surfactant precursor for various products.
Refined coconut oil is saponified or transesterified to produce fatty acids and glycerol for detergent and soap manufacturing. Food-grade coconut oil also appears in dietary supplements and nutritional products as a carrier.
Coconut oil is supplied as a liquid or solid white fat depending on ambient temperature, available in refined, bleached, and deodorized grades. It is also offered in virgin and extra-virgin grades for premium applications.
Standard specifications include food-grade (FCC), USP, and BP/Ph.Eur. grades. These quality standards ensure the material is suitable for sensitive pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations.
Bulk supply is typically offered in drums, IBCs, and flexi-tanks to meet industrial requirements. The product remains a versatile staple for manufacturers seeking stable, plant-based lipid solutions for diverse global markets.
