Candelilla wax
Description
Candelilla wax (CAS 8006-44-8), also identified as E902, is a plant-derived wax sourced from the candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico. It functions as a structuring agent, lubricant, and rheology modifier across food, cosmetic, and industrial coating applications.
In lip balms, lipsticks, and solid cosmetic sticks, it provides firmness and a smooth application texture without the use of animal-derived ingredients. Food manufacturers use the wax as a glazing and surface-finishing agent on confectionery and chewing gum base.
It is also applied to fresh produce coatings to control moisture loss and improve appearance. In adhesive and sealant formulations, it adjusts melt viscosity and reduces tack, making it a functional component in hot-melt systems.
Industrial coatings and polishes, including leather, furniture, and floor care products, rely on it for hardness, sheen, and abrasion resistance. This versatile material is supplied as hard, brittle flakes or pellets for easy handling.
Refined grades are available to meet specific food and cosmetic processing requirements. Food-grade material is supplied in compliance with E902 specifications, while cosmetic-grade material meets purity standards relevant to personal care formulation.
Technical-grade forms are available for industrial coating and adhesive applications where food or cosmetic compliance is not required. These grades ensure optimal performance in heavy-duty manufacturing environments and specialized chemical processes.
