Lanolin
Description
Lanolin (CAS 8006-54-0), also known as wool wax or wool grease, is a purified waxy substance recovered from raw sheep's wool. Approved as E913 for surface treatment applications, it functions as an emollient, emulsifier, and lubricant.
In cosmetics and skincare, it forms the base of lip balms, barrier creams, and moisturizing ointments. Its affinity for skin keratin supports deep emolliency without occlusion across personal care and pharmaceutical markets.
Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an absorption base in topical preparations, enabling water-in-oil emulsification without synthetic emulsifiers. This makes it a versatile ingredient for various medical applications.
In metalworking and corrosion protection, lanolin-based compounds coat metal surfaces and tooling to prevent rust during storage and transit. This provides a durable protective layer for industrial equipment and parts.
Textile and leather processors apply it as a fiber lubricant and conditioning agent to reduce friction during spinning. It also improves pliability in finished leather goods, ensuring a high-quality final product.
The material is supplied as a pale yellow to amber waxy solid, available in anhydrous and hydrous forms. Standard grades include USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. for pharmaceutical use and industrial needs.
Cosmetic-grade and technical-grade materials are also available for specific industrial applications. Anhydrous lanolin is the most commercially prevalent form, typically packaged in drums or pails for bulk distribution.
