Lanolin alcohol
Description
Lanolin alcohol (CAS 8027-33-6), also sold under trade names such as Dusoran and Dusoline, is a complex mixture of sterols and aliphatic alcohols derived from wool wax. It functions primarily as an emulsifier, emollient, and rheology modifier across personal care, pharmaceutical, and industrial formulations.
In cosmetics, lanolin alcohol stabilizes water-in-oil emulsions in creams, lotions, and ointment bases, while contributing moisturization that supports skin barrier function. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an emulsifying and absorption-enhancing excipient in topical preparations.
These preparations include medicated creams and dermatological bases. In textile and leather processing, it acts as a fiber lubricant and conditioning agent, improving softness and workability of finished materials.
Coatings and adhesive formulators incorporate it as a rheology modifier and plasticizing component where controlled viscosity and film flexibility are required. This versatility makes it a staple in various manufacturing sectors.
Lanolin alcohol is supplied as a waxy solid, typically in flake or block form, with a characteristic pale yellow to amber color. It is available in cosmetic-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications for diverse needs.
The Ph.Eur. and BP grades are commonly referenced for regulated applications. Technical grades are also offered for industrial end uses such as textile processing and coatings where high purity is less critical.
