Behenyl alcohol
Description
Behenyl alcohol (CAS 661-19-8), also known as docosanol, is a long-chain fatty alcohol derived primarily from natural vegetable sources. It functions as an emulsifier, emollient, and rheology modifier across personal care, food, and industrial formulations.
Docosanol is also recognized as an active pharmaceutical ingredient in antiviral topical products. In personal care, it builds viscosity and stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions in creams, lotions, and hair conditioners.
This ingredient contributes to a smooth, non-greasy skin feel in various cosmetic applications. Food-grade behenyl alcohol is used as a glazing and release agent in confectionery and bakery applications to improve texture.
In lubricant formulations, it acts as a friction modifier and base component in solid and semi-solid greases where high-temperature stability is required. Industrial wax blends also incorporate it to control consistency.
Metalworking compounds utilize this material to improve surface lubrication and overall performance. Behenyl alcohol is supplied as white waxy flakes or pastilles, with a typical purity of 95 to 98 percent C22 fatty alcohol content.
It is available in cosmetic-grade and food-grade (FCC) specifications for diverse industry needs. Pharmaceutical-grade material meets USP and Ph.Eur. standards for docosanol to ensure high quality and safety.
Bulk supply is standard in bag or drum packaging for efficient logistics and storage. Kosher and halal certifications are commonly available for food and personal care applications requiring specific compliance.
