Carnauba wax
Description
Carnauba wax (CAS 8015-86-9), also known as Brazil wax and approved as E903, is a natural vegetable wax harvested from the leaves of the Copernicia prunifera palm. It delivers hard, high-gloss surface finishes and acts as a release agent.
This versatile material functions as a lubricant and film-former across a broad range of industrial and consumer applications. In food manufacturing, it is applied as a surface coating on confectionery, fruits, and pharmaceutical tablets.
The wax helps to control moisture loss and deliver a polished appearance for various edible products. Personal care formulators use it to build structure and gloss in lip products, mascaras, and solid pomades.
Its high melting point allows stable formulation without synthetic alternatives, making it a preferred natural choice. Printing inks and coatings rely on carnauba wax dispersions to improve scuff resistance and reduce friction.
On paper and board substrates, it provides essential protection and durability. In industrial applications, it functions as a mold release agent and is incorporated into floor polishes and automotive waxes.
It is also used in adhesive formulations to modify surface slip and hardness. Carnauba wax is supplied as flakes, powder, or pastilles, with flake being the most common commercial form for bulk distribution.
Recognized grades include T1, T3, and T4, reflecting color and refinement level, with T1 being the lightest and most refined. Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade material is available to FCC and BP specifications.
